What is Manglik Dosha?

Manglik Dosha, also called Mangal Dosha or Kuja Dosha, is said to occur when Mars (Mangal) sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a birth chart. Classical texts treat it as a factor to weigh in marriage compatibility, traditionally linked with friction in partnerships.

Astrologers check it from more than one reference point (the Lagna, the Moon and, in some traditions, Venus), and the texts describe many cancellations and exceptions, so a placement on its own is not a conclusion.

How this check works

Your chart is worked out from the exact positions of the planets at your birth, in the sidereal zodiac used in Indian astrology. Tirth casts your chart, counts the house Mars occupies from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus, and shows whether each reference point forms the dosha and which exceptions were checked.

Frequently asked questions

In which houses does Mars cause Manglik Dosha?

The 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses, counted from the Lagna (and, in the wider check, from the Moon and Venus).

Is Manglik Dosha always present if Mars is in one of those houses?

By definition the placement forms the dosha, but classical texts list several exceptions and cancellations, such as both partners being Manglik. Tirth reports which exceptions it checked.

Why check from the Moon and Venus as well?

Different traditions use different reference points; checking from the Lagna, Moon and Venus gives the fuller picture that many astrologers consult.

Should this replace advice from an astrologer?

No. It is a calculation aid; matters of marriage are best discussed with a qualified astrologer who can weigh the whole chart.
