What is Kundli Milan (Guna Milan)?

Kundli Milan, or Guna Milan, is the traditional Vedic method of comparing two birth charts for marriage compatibility. The most widely used system is Ashtakoot Milan, which scores the match across eight factors (kootas) for a total of 36 points (Gunas), based mainly on the two people's Moon signs and birth nakshatras.

The eight kootas and their points

Varna (1 point), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8) add up to 36. Each koota looks at a different theme (temperament, mutual attraction, health and family compatibility among them), and is scored from the Moon sign and nakshatra of each partner.

Many traditions regard a total of around 18 or more out of 36 as acceptable, but the score is one factor among several; a full reading also considers the wider charts, and Manglik Dosha is usually checked separately.

How it works

Your chart is worked out from the exact positions of the planets at your birth, in the sidereal zodiac used in Indian astrology. Enter each partner's date, time and place of birth; the Moon sign and nakshatra are derived for you and each koota is shown with its score, so you can see exactly where points were gained or lost.

Frequently asked questions

How many points out of 36 is a good Guna Milan score?

Traditions vary, but many treat a total of about 18 or above as acceptable, with higher scores considered more harmonious. The score is one input, not a verdict.

What are the 8 kootas in Ashtakoot Milan?

Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi, worth 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 points respectively.

Which charts are compared in Kundli Milan?

Ashtakoot Milan compares the Moon sign and birth nakshatra of the two people. Each person's full Kundli can then be studied separately.

Do I need the exact birth time?

The Moon sign and nakshatra change slowly, so an approximate time is usually enough for Ashtakoot scoring, though an exact time is best, especially if the Moon is near a sign boundary.
