What is a Kundli?
A Kundli (also called a Janam Kundli, birth chart or Vedic horoscope) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born, drawn in the sidereal system used in Indian astrology (Jyotish). It records where the nine grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu) sit among the twelve rashis (signs) and twelve bhavas (houses).
The rising sign at birth is your Lagna (Ascendant); the sign the Moon occupied is your Chandra Rashi (Moon sign); and the Moon's star is your Janma Nakshatra. In Vedic astrology these three are read together, rather than the Sun sign alone.
What your Tirth Kundli includes
You get the main Rashi chart (D1) and the Navamsa (D9), plus further divisional charts such as Dashamsha (D10) and Hora (D2); your Vimshottari Dasha timeline showing the current Mahadasha and Antardasha; and all sixteen of Parashara's divisional charts with the Moon chart; planetary strength (Shadbala and Vimshopaka); and every classical Yoga and Dosha we check, listed as present or not found.
How the Kundli is calculated
Your chart is worked out from the exact positions of the planets at your birth, in the sidereal zodiac used in Indian astrology. Houses are whole-sign. Your birth place is converted to its own time zone (including the daylight-saving or historical offset in force on your birth date), so a chart for a birth outside India is not computed as if the clock time were IST.
Birth time matters: the Ascendant changes roughly every two hours, and the Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days. If you don't know your exact time, choose "I don't know my exact birth time". Your Moon sign and Dasha stay accurate, while the Ascendant and houses are marked approximate.
Frequently asked questions
What details do I need to generate a Kundli?
Your date of birth, time of birth and place of birth. Name and gender are optional and are used only for the report header.
Is a birth time required?
It is strongly recommended. Without it we use midday and mark the Ascendant, houses and divisional charts as approximate; your Moon sign and Vimshottari Dasha remain reliable.
Which ayanamsa does Tirth use?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the ayanamsa most commonly used for Vedic astrology in India.
What is the difference between a Kundli and a horoscope?
In Indian usage they mean the same thing: a birth chart cast for the moment and place of birth. Vedic charts use the sidereal zodiac, so your Sun sign here can differ from your Western sign.
