What is Sade Sati?
Sade Sati (literally "seven and a half") is the roughly 7½-year period when Saturn (Shani) transits the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign, and the sign after it. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, so the cycle has three phases (rising, peak and setting), and comes around roughly every 29½ years.
A related transit, Dhaiya (sometimes called Small Panoti), is Saturn's roughly 2½-year passage through the 4th or 8th sign from your Moon sign. Tradition associates these periods with patience, effort and restructuring; effects are described in many ways, and none is a certainty.
How it works
Your chart is worked out from the exact positions of the planets at your birth, in the sidereal zodiac used in Indian astrology. We find your Moon sign from your birth details, compare it with Saturn's current sidereal sign, and show your phase, the dates each phase begins and ends (including when Saturn briefly retrogrades back into a sign), and the start of your next cycle.
Frequently asked questions
How long does Sade Sati last?
About 7½ years in total (three phases of roughly 2½ years each) as Saturn moves through the sign before, of and after your Moon sign.
How do I know if I am in Sade Sati?
Enter your birth details: Sade Sati is active when Saturn's current sign is the one before, the same as, or the one after your Moon sign.
What are the three phases of Sade Sati?
Rising (Saturn in the sign before your Moon sign), peak (in your Moon sign) and setting (in the sign after).
What is Dhaiya?
Saturn's transit of the 4th or 8th sign from your Moon sign, lasting about 2½ years.
Can Saturn's retrograde change the dates?
Yes. Because Saturn turns retrograde, it can dip back into a sign for a while; Tirth shows such re-entries so the dates are accurate.
