Balarama Jayanti Vrat Katha is a sacred Hindu festival dedicated to Balarama, the elder brother of Krishna. He is worshipped as the symbol of strength, agriculture, devotion, and righteousness. Devotees observe this vrat (fast) for the well being of children, family prosperity, and protection from negative energies.
Birth of Lord Balarama
According to the Bhagavata Purana, the cruel king Kansa imprisoned his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva after hearing a prophecy that Devaki’s eighth son would kill him.
Kansa killed Devaki’s first six children. When she conceived the seventh child, Lord Vishnu used his divine power to transfer the unborn child from Devaki’s womb to Rohini’s womb. This miraculous child was Balarama.
Because he was “drawn away” from one womb to another, he was also called Sankarshan. Later, Balarama became a powerful warrior and always supported Lord Krishna in destroying evil forces.
1. The Hal Shashthi Legend
Once, a woman observed the Hal Shashthi fast for her child’s safety. However, she mistakenly ate food prepared from crops grown in ploughed fields, which is forbidden during this vrat.
Out of fear, she lied about breaking her fast. Soon after, her child fell seriously ill. Realizing her mistake, she sincerely prayed to Lord Balarama and promised to follow the vrat properly the next year. With true devotion and honesty, she observed the fast correctly, and her child recovered.
Lesson: Honesty and strict observance of vrat rules bring blessings and protection.
3. Avatar of Sheshnag
It is believed that Lord Balarama is the incarnation of Sheshnag, the divine serpent on whom Lord Vishnu rests.
Just as Sheshnag supports the Earth, Balarama represents strength and stability in the world. His primary weapon is a plough (Hal), symbolizing agriculture, and a mace (Gada), symbolizing power.
Farmers especially worship him for a good harvest and prosperity.
