What is a KP chart?

Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) is a system developed by K.S. Krishnamurti in the twentieth century. It keeps the Vedic zodiac and nakshatras but judges every point in a chart through three levels of rulership: the sign lord, the star lord (the lord of the nakshatra, by Vimshottari) and the sub lord, found by dividing each nakshatra in the same proportions as the Vimshottari periods. The sub lord of a house cusp is the deciding factor in KP for the matters of that house.

Two technical settings differ from a Lahiri Kundli. KP uses its own ayanamsa, the Krishnamurti ayanamsa, which is a few minutes of arc smaller than Lahiri; and it uses Placidus houses, in which cusps are unequal and depend on the birth latitude, rather than whole signs. Because of these, every position in your KP chart differs slightly from your Kundli, and a planet near a cusp can fall in a different house.

How to read it

Tirth lists the twelve cusps and the nine planets in degrees and minutes with all three lords. KP practitioners read the sub lord of the cusp for a question (the 7th for marriage, the 10th for career), then check which houses its star lord signifies. This page gives the positions; the judgement is the astrologer's.

Every tool uses the same chart and the same classical rules as your full Kundli report, so the results always agree with your reading.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my KP positions differ from my Kundli?

KP uses the Krishnamurti ayanamsa, a few minutes smaller than Lahiri, and Placidus houses. Positions shift by a few minutes of arc, and a planet near a cusp can change house.

What is a sub lord?

Each nakshatra is divided into nine unequal parts in the proportions of the Vimshottari periods, starting from the nakshatra's own lord. The ruler of the part a point falls in is its sub lord.

Why are the houses unequal?

Placidus houses divide the sky by time rather than by equal arcs, so cusp sizes depend on latitude and the time of birth. Near the equator they are close to equal; at high latitudes they vary widely.

Does KP need an exact birth time?

More than most systems. Cusps move about a degree every four minutes, and the sub lord of a cusp can change within a couple of minutes of birth time.
