What is Lagna (the Ascendant)?
Your Lagna, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign rising over the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It becomes the first house of your Kundli, and every other house is counted from it, which makes it the foundation of the chart.
The Lagna changes sign roughly every two hours, so it depends on an accurate birth time and on your birth place. If your time is uncertain, treat the result as approximate.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Lagna and Rashi?
Lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth (changes about every 2 hours); Rashi usually means the Moon sign (changes about every 2¼ days).
Why do I need my exact birth time for the Lagna?
Because the rising sign changes about every two hours; a difference of an hour or two can change it.
Is the Vedic Lagna the same as my Western rising sign?
Often not. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which typically shifts the rising sign back by one sign compared with the tropical zodiac.
