What is Char Dasha?

Char Dasha is the main period system of Jaimini astrology. Its periods are ruled by the twelve signs rather than by planets. The sequence starts from the sign of your Lagna, and each sign's period runs from 1 to 12 years, set by how far that sign's lord sits from it in your chart.

Because the periods depend on the Lagna and the placement of every sign lord, two people born on the same day but at different times can have very different Char Dasha sequences.

How it works

Your chart is worked out from the exact positions of the planets at your birth, in the sidereal zodiac used in Indian astrology. Char Dasha has several calculation traditions; Tirth follows K.N. Rao's, the one most widely used today. Each period also shows which house that sign is from your Lagna, the usual starting point for reading it.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the periods signs, not planets?

In Jaimini astrology the signs themselves rule the periods. The planets matter through the signs they occupy and the signs they own.

Why does another calculator show different dates?

Char Dasha has more than one tradition, mainly in how period lengths and the direction of the sequence are worked out. Tirth uses K.N. Rao's method; others can differ by a year or more.

Does the birth time matter?

A great deal. The sequence starts from your Lagna, which changes sign about every two hours, so an uncertain birth time can change the whole sequence.
