What is Ashtottari Dasha?
Ashtottari Dasha is a planetary period system of 108 years (ashta-uttara-shata, eight over a hundred) with eight lords: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu and Venus. Ketu has no period. The Sun rules 6 years, the Moon 15, Mars 8, Mercury 17, Saturn 10, Jupiter 19, Rahu 12 and Venus 21. As in Vimshottari, the first period and the balance left at birth come from the Moon's nakshatra, but the nakshatras are shared out among the eight lords differently, so the two systems rarely run the same planet at the same time.
It is a conditional dasha. Classical texts apply it only to charts that meet certain conditions, most often that Rahu sits in a kendra or trikona from the lord of the Lagna, and some authors add the half of the lunar month and whether the birth was by day or by night. Tirth checks these conditions and says plainly whether the system applies to your chart; the full sequence is shown either way, so you can compare.
When astrologers use it
Most astrologers read Vimshottari first. Ashtottari is read alongside it when the chart qualifies, and the periods on which the two systems agree are given more weight for timing. Where they disagree, the conditional system is treated as a second opinion rather than a replacement.
Every tool uses the same chart and the same classical rules as your full Kundli report, so the results always agree with your reading.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Ashtottari period differ from my Vimshottari period?
The two systems divide the nakshatras among different lords and run different lengths (108 and 120 years), so they rarely run the same planet at once. That difference is the point: astrologers compare them.
What does 'does not apply' mean?
Your chart does not meet the classical conditions for this system, usually Rahu's position from the Lagna lord. The sequence is still shown for reference, but most astrologers would rely on Vimshottari for your chart.
Why is Ketu missing?
Ashtottari has eight lords. Ketu is not given a period in this system; its 108 years are shared among the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu and Venus.
Does the birth time matter?
Yes, the same way as in Vimshottari: the balance at birth comes from the Moon's exact position, which moves about half a degree an hour.
