प्राचीन समय की बात है। एक नगर में एक निर्धन लेकिन धर्मपरायण स्त्री अपने पति के साथ रहती थी। वह अत्यंत श्रद्धा से देवी देवताओं की पूजा करती थी, परंतु आर्थिक तंगी और पारिवारिक कष्टों के कारण उसका जीवन दुखों से भरा था।

एक दिन वह स्त्री अत्यंत दुखी होकर वन में चली गई और वहाँ बैठकर देवी गौरी का स्मरण करने लगी। उसने सच्चे मन से प्रार्थना की “हे माँ गौरी! मेरे जीवन के कष्ट दूर कीजिए और मेरे परिवार को सुख समृद्धि प्रदान कीजिए।”

उसी समय माँ गौरी उसके सामने प्रकट हुईं और बोलीं, “हे पुत्री! यदि तुम श्रद्धा और नियमपूर्वक ज्येष्ठा गौरी व्रत कथा  करोगी, तो तुम्हारे सभी कष्ट दूर हो जाएँगे।”

देवी के आदेशानुसार उस स्त्री ने ज्येष्ठ मास में विधिपूर्वक ज्येष्ठा गौरी व्रत किया। उसने उपवास रखा, माँ गौरी की प्रतिमा स्थापित की, फूल, फल और नैवेद्य अर्पित किए तथा पूरे मन से व्रत कथा का श्रवण किया।

कुछ ही समय में उसके घर की आर्थिक स्थिति सुधरने लगी। परिवार में सुख शांति और समृद्धि आने लगी। उसका दांपत्य जीवन भी मधुर हो गया।

नगर की अन्य स्त्रियों ने जब उसके जीवन में आए परिवर्तन को देखा, तो उन्होंने भी श्रद्धा से ज्येष्ठा गौरी व्रत करना आरंभ कर दिया। सभी को माँ गौरी का आशीर्वाद प्राप्त हुआ।
