The biggest annual festival of the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple is Makaravilakku, which is a seven-day festival, and begins on the auspicious day of Makar Sankranti. The festival is characterized by great Thiruvabharanam procession that displays the divine ornaments of Lord Ayyappa. The best part is the Makaravilakku or Makara Jyothi a divine light that falls three times on the hill of Ponnambalamedu. It has about half a million followers who come to observe this religious ceremony.
