- Theni District was formed after bifurcation from the erstwhile Madurai District as per G.O.Ms.No.679 Revenue Department dated 25.07.96
- The district was officially formed on 1 January 1997, with Dr.K.Satyagopal IAS as the first collector
- The Mullai-Periyar merger project in the late 19th century brought significant population growth to the area
- Theni developed rapidly due to commerce and the establishment of industries like cotton spinning mills and sugar mills.
